Reithrodontomys megalotis ranges from southwestern Canada, through the western and mid-western United States, to southern Mexico (Oaxaca); from sea level to 4,000 m asl. This species occurs in mesic or dry prairies, meadows, shrublands, deserts, marshes, and old fields. Western Harvest Mouse mainly feeds on seeds, but also consumes herbaceous material and insects; it is known to store food.
